When a poll was conducted, nearly 29 million people admitted that they had driven drunk at least once — and those are only the ones who admit to it! Here are five sobering facts you might not know about drunk drivers.
It’s More Common Than You Think
Every day in America, 300,000 intoxicated drivers take to the road. The average drunk driver has been drunk behind the wheel 80 times before being arrested for DWI. Adults between the ages of 26 and 29 make up the largest drunk driver demographic.
Will Likely Affect You
Two-thirds of Americans will be in an alcohol-related car accident sometime in their lives. Even if you don’t drive drunk, other people do. Keep your distance from anyone who appears to be swerving or driving erratically.
Injuries are Extremely Common
Every two minutes, someone is injured in a drunk driving accident. 27 Americans die at the hands of drunk drivers every day. In 2014, more than 1 million Americans were convicted of driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Every time they step behind the wheel, they risk injuring or killing themselves and others.
Suspended Licenses Don’t Stop DWIs
Being convicted for a DUI or DWI can cost someone their driver’s license, among other things. However, it’s estimated that half to two-thirds of all convicted drunk drivers keep on driving, even without their license.
The Death Toll is Very High
Tragically, someone in America dies from an alcohol-related car accident every 53 minutes. A 2013 statistic shows that over 1,100 children were killed by drunk drivers, either while the child was a passenger in a car, or while walking or cycling. Adults between 21 and 24 are the largest group to cause fatal crashes.
Spread the word to drink responsibly, and always have a sober individual to drive you home if you decide to drink.
